In the Word Wednesday-Dig Deeper Series: Verse Mapping

digdeeperseries

We’re back to our study of how to dig deeper into the Word, and today’s topic is Verse Mapping. You’ll find all sorts of ways and to map verses, and there’s really no right or wrong way…the idea is to just dig in deeper and learn more about what God is saying. In the Word Wednesday-Crumbs

crumbs

I’m taking a little break from the Dig Deeper Series today. We’ll be getting back to that soon.

I felt like God wanted to share something different today.

Recently I’ve had a situation that has left me reeling…feeling like a fool, like I was worthless.

Maybe you’ve felt that way too.

But here’s the thing…that’s not what God sees in us. And get this–that’s not what he THINKS about you or me.

After Jesus had fed the 5,000 He gave some interesting instructions to the disciples.

When they had all had enough to eat, He said to the disciples,

“Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.”

John 6:12

Friends, God doesn’t want to let anything go to waste, not even the crumbs of our messy lives.

He wants to use everything…everything…to bring glory to His name.

Be comforted that you are not alone. God looks at the messes in our lives and helps us clean them up, and then is good enough to show us His light in the midst of it all.

So don’t be discouraged when situations happen and the devil accuses you, saying “Who do you think you are?” or whispers the lie that you’re nothing but a big ol’ hot mess. You might be a big ol’ hot mess sometimes, but that’s not the end all, be all of who you are. You’re loved by God, the creator of the universe and if HE says that you have value, then friend, you DO.

Pick yourself back up. Continue in OBEDIENCE to God. Clean up your mess and give it to God, even the crumbs. Then watch what He does with them.

Blessings and joy,
Sarah

Dig Deeper Series-SOAP Method

In my last post I introduced you to a new series I’m super excited to start. Well, today is our first official day! Yay!

In the Word Wednesday- Idols

treasures-in-heaven

But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal;

Matthew 6:20

I didn’t intend to put my hobbies ahead of God, it just kind of happened. One day I realized that I was spending more time on the things I wanted to do instead of spending time with God.

Have you ever found yourself in this position?

Twice now I’ve read in my Bible or did a devotional and both times they were on the same thing. I think maybe God’s trying to get my attention.

In this world with so many things it has to offer, it’s easy to get swept up into doing this or doing that and forgetting to do the one thing that will start our days off right…spending time with God.

And there are certain seasons of life when it’s easier to get off track than others…and I’m not making excuses or justifying my idolatry or yours. The Bible is clear that whatever we think about the most, talk about the most, do the most…that’s where our treasure is. That’s what our hearts are worshiping.

I think that God gives us wake-up calls from time to time to grab our attention. For some of us that might mean that chaos is ruling in our house or that we continually feel on edge or crabby. When life seems to spin out of control, that’s when we need to take stock of our hearts and determine whether we’re storing up worldly treasures or storing up God Himself.

Life on this broken planet won’t instantly turn to sunshine and roses once you decide to put God first, but it will start to change. You’ll notice that you have more joy. More peace. More laughter. You feel less on edge. You make better decisions. And that’s because we’re coming back to the one thing we really needed all along…Him.

Reflection Questions:

What captures the bulk of my time? TV? My phone? Social Media? A Hobby? My Children?

What do I spend a majority of my money on after the bills and essentials are paid for?

Action Steps:

1. Repent of your idolatry. Ask God to show you where hidden areas might be in your life. Journal them and pray over the things God reveals to you.
2. Evaluate your mornings. Are you always rushing out the door with no time to spare? Are you getting up early, but get sucked into checking Facebook or social media? It’s time to revamp your morning routine. Try setting your clock ahead twenty minutes and going to bed twenty minutes earlier so that you have time to read a morning devotional.
3. Make a commitment to spend time in the Word every morning and do it.

Friends, I wish I could say that putting God first always comes easily for me, but it doesn’t. That’s why I think it’s so important for us to encourage one another to dig deep into the Word. Coming up I’m going to give you a quick peak inside my Quiet Times and how I go deeper in studying the Bible.

Until then,

Blessings and joy!
Sarah

What have you done to spend more time with God?

In the Word Wednesday- Ascribe

ascribeitww

Ascribe- Verb (used with object), ascribed, ascribing.

1. to credit or assign, as to a cause or source; attribute; impute:
The alphabet is usually ascribed to the Phoenicians.

2. to attribute or think of as belonging, as a quality or characteristic:
They ascribed courage to me for something I did out of sheer panic.

from dictionary.com

Psalm 29 starts off saying:

“Ascribe to the LORD, O mighty ones, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.”

Later, it speaks of the voice of God being like thunder over mighty waters, as powerful, majestic, able to break cedars, but also able to make cities skip in joy like calves. David also compares God’s voice to flashes of lightning, able to twist oak trees, that can strip entire forests bare.

Then my favorite part:

verse 11 “The LORD gives strength to his people; the LORD blesses his people with peace.”

Wow!

Ascribe. Have you ever thought about the power of God’s voice? That’s what David is getting at in this chapter. That God’s voice, just His regular voice has the power to strip forests bare, to make trees twist on the spot, and to thunder and quake.

God possesses immense power in just His voice that we can only partially imagine, and yet, with His voice He created the universe. He spoke every star into place. He told the earth to bear fruit and it did.

And yet, this same God who has the power to break trees in half with its magnitude is gentle with us.

God, in His infinite glory and wisdom knows that we can’t handle the full power of His voice, and yet we know it’s there. God, in His great love for you and for me decides to restrain this raw power and turn it into something to give us strength and peace.

Ascribe to Him glory and strength. Because He is glory. He is strength. And He chooses to give to us freely out of His love.

Be blessed and comforted by this, friends. God is so good to us, in all of His might and majesty, He loves us.

Blessings and joy!
~Sarah

P.S.: What words do you ascribe to God?

In the Word Wednesday…Rain

rain_deut_blog
When those first drops of rain first fell after our drought, my breath caught in my chest. Surely this wasn’t really rain? But it was. We stared in wonder at the wet stuff coming down from the heavens.
For so long we had waited for it to rain. Clouds rolled in but promptly rolled back out. I had good hair days without frizz for three months straight– a lifetime record for my curly locks.

In the Word Wednesday…Blessings

blessings_blogDeuteronomy 30:9-11

9 Then the Lord your God will make you most prosperous in all the work of your hands and in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your land. The Lord will again delight in you and make you prosperous, just as he delighted in your ancestors, 10 if you obey the Lord your God and keep his commands and decrees that are written in this Book of the Law and turn to the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

11 Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach.

I just want to jump up and down and shout out how great God is!

Isn’t it awesome how He always has a Word at the right time? These verses were in my Bible reading for this morning’s quiet time.

Broken Pieces

brokenpieces_blog
Shattered.
Empty.
Falling apart.
Used.
Discarded.
Rejected.
The way we see ourselves is often radically different from how God sees us. We look at our past and our mistakes and think we are broken. Beyond repair. We look at the wounds that continue to hurt and fester and think that things will never change.
But we have to remember the beauty of God’s creation. He made the skies, painted the sunsets and sunrises and called them good. He placed each star in the sky and gave them a name, and called them good. He made the animals, and all of creation and called it good.
